At least four members of the same family were killed on Wednesday in inter-clashes in Garissa County in northeastern Kenya.

Garissa County Commissioner James Kianda said the four, three men, all brothers, and a one-year-old girl belonging to one of the men, were killed by unknown assailants in cold blood in their houses in Dujis village, about 100 km from Garissa town.

Kianda said that stern action would be taken against anyone found to have been involved in the killings.

According to sources, the four were sprayed with bullets while asleep in their makeshift houses. The assailants then escaped on foot after accomplishing what is believed to be a revenge.

Reports indicate that there has been a long-standing border dispute between the Audhak and Aulian clans in the region, resulting in the deaths of several people last year.

Clashes over land are common in Garissa County, with several people losing their lives and scores getting injured as a result. Residents say the loss of communal grazing land to farming and environmental degradation has also fuelled conflicts in a number of pastoral areas in the Kenya-Somalia border region. Enditem
