The African Union (AU) on Tuesday called for financial and logistical support in helping African migrants in Libya.

Speaking to the press in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Moussa Faki Mahamat, chairperson of the AU Commission, reiterated dismay on reports of and strongly condemned against the auctioning of African migrants in Libya as slaves.

He said the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights has been approached to urgently carry out investigations into the reports.

“I appeal to all member states of the AU, to African private sector, to African citizens so that they can make financial contribution to help alleviate the sufferings of these African migrants in Libya,” Faki said. “I urge member states that have the logistical means to make available these facilities in order to facilitate the evacuation from Libya those who wish to be evacuated.”

The chairperson has also called for collaboration from the international community to address and find lasting solution to the problem.

In his previous statement, Faki urged swift action to identify all perpetrators and accomplices, with a view to bringing them to justice. Enditem
