Rapper and former University of Ghana student leader Guru has said that Members of Parliament (MPs) in Ayawaso, Nkoranza South and Nkoranza North would lose if he contested their seats.
The musician, whose real name is Maradona Yeboah Adjei, made the remarks in a radio interview published by GhanaWeb. He has not declared a bid for any seat. Ghana’s next general election is due in December 2028.
He said that if he ran in any of the three areas, “the MPs there should resign because they will not win.” He said his social and development work in those communities had built him enough support for voters to back him over anyone else.
He did not say which Ayawaso constituency he meant. Greater Accra has four. One of them, Ayawaso West Wuogon, is held by actor John Dumelo, who won it in the 2024 election. Nkoranza South and Nkoranza North are in the Bono East Region.
Guru rested his case on his one-year term as president of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (SRC). He said that during that term he provided food for students, drilled boreholes to ease water shortages on campus, and took the university to court to push for a 25 per cent cut in fees. He also said many of his policies were still in progress when his term ended. If he could do that much for students in one year, he argued, a four-year term in Parliament would bring constituents far more.
GhanaWeb’s report did not include any independent check of those claims. Reports from his time in office show he publicly opposed a 20 per cent rise in Residential Facility User Fees on campus.
His route to the SRC presidency was contested. The SRC’s vetting committee disqualified him in 2024 because he did not live in a university hall, which the council’s constitution required of candidates. The university’s Appeals Board later reinstated him, and a student filed a suit at the Adentan Circuit Court challenging that decision. Guru and his running mate, Jeffery Adu-Yeboah, went on to win with 50.7 per cent of the vote, or 9,455 of 18,659 ballots cast.
During that campaign, Guru said he was a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He rose to fame in 2011 with the hit Lapaz Toyota.
He would not be the first entertainer to move into national politics. Actress Dzifa Gomashie represents Ketu South and serves as Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts. Dumelo is Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture.
