BECE Results Not Encouraging-Mrs Anyan

Mrs Georgina Anyan, Atwima-Mponua District Director of Education, has appealed to stakeholders to make efforts to help shore up the academic performance of pupils in the District.

The appeal comes on the back of consistent poor performance of candidates presented in the District in the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) despite interventions by the District Assembly.

Mrs Anyan attributed the situation to factors including the late supply of teaching and learning materials to the schools, inability of most parents to provide their children with their basic needs in school, teacher absenteeism, truancy among pupils and lack of communal support.

She was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Nyinahin in response to complaints that the huge investments by the District Assembly to provide classroom blocks, teachers? bungalows and other educational infrastructure did not reflect in students? academic performance.

A district project progress report made available to a team of GNA reporters working in the district under the STAR-Ghana/GNA Media audit and tracking project showed that between 2010 and 2013, the Assembly spent more money on education projects than any other project.

In spite of this, performance of pupils from the 73 junior high schools in the district in BECE within that period has not been encouraging.

The STAR- GNA project is aimed at putting a spotlight on how government?s funds are impacting on the lives of the people living in the rural areas and how local government is faring in transparency and accountability.

The report showed that in 2010 out of the 1,849 candidates presented for the examinations, 1,098 passed.

In 2011, only 918 passed out of the 2,049 candidates, in 2012 out of the 1,995 candidates, 959 were successful and 888 out of the 1,870 presented in 2013 qualified to enter the senior high school.

The district has 1,606 teachers, made up of 957 trained teachers and 649 untrained teachers.

Mrs Anyan said the provision of quality education was a shared responsibility of all stakeholders and there was the need for each one to play his or her role effectively to ensure success.

She said teachers who had been found wanting in the discharge of their duties had always been disciplined by the sector authorities, adding that, her outfit would continue to ensure efficient supervision of teachers at all levels to improve classroom delivery. GNA
