India’s ruling party was holding mass rallies and press conferences Tuesday to mark one year since it came to power after a landslide general election victory.

The Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is carrying out a massive campaign – including a planned 200 rallies – to showcase its achievements over the past 12 months.
In a letter to the nation, carried on the front pages of leading newspapers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his government, the first to hold an outright majority in three decades, had revived confidence among Indians.
“We assumed office at a time when confidence in the India story was waning. Unabated corruption and indecisiveness had paralyzed the government,” Modi said.
“Runaway prices were immediately brought under control. The languishing economy was rejuvenated, building on stable and policy-driven proactive governance,” he said.
Opposition parties are also holding demonstrations on Tuesday to protest the failures of the government.
Modi’s government has been criticized for being slow in bringing key economic reforms.
The opposition Indian National Congress accused his government of pursuing a “pro-corporate” agenda that hurt interests of the poor and farmers.
