The Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), Kabral Blay-Amihere has urged the media to return to the core values of journalism.

He said the media?s core responsibility is to promote accountability, objectivity, fairness and respect for human rights and above all produce stories in the interest of the country.

Mr. Blay-Amihere disclosed this during the Annual Marketing Conference organized by the Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana (CIMG).

The two-day programme was themed ?the Role of Marketing for Sustainable Multi-Party Politics.?

He noted that the media has a great responsibility to influence people and lead them positively, especially when it involves politics.

John Attafua, Chief Executive Officer for Marketing and Social Research International, who spoke on the topic, ?Empowering for Political Marketing Research, noted that public opinion and research should guide national policy.

He added that public opinion should become part of governance and money should be spent on opinion polls to know the views of people.

Attafua suggested that opinion polls should be institutionalized in Ghana to sustain democracy in the country.

Dorothy K. Gordon, Director-General, Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT, said 70% of Ghanaians use social media to interact, collaborate and blend with other people.

Ms. Gordon noted that even though social media had become useful in our world today, the Electoral Commission (EC), Ghana peace council and media houses should control and monitor these networks.

She encouraged Ghanaians to use these platforms to create social harmony and help forge development.
