– At Ayawaso, to save lives
As part of plans aimed at surmounting blood deficits in the various hospitals, a community based Non-Governmental Organization, VOiCE, is leading the various youth groups in the three Ayawaso constituencies and its environs in a blood donation exercise scheduled for November 29 of this year.
The blood donation exercise, which is dubbed ?Blood for Yaro?, is being jointly organized by VOiCe, Doctors without Boundary and the Ridge Regional Hospital Blood Bank to help save lives.
According to the organizers the exercise was informed by a research which shows that 50 percent of maternal mortalities recorded in Accra are as a result of unavailability of blood.
In an interview with The aL-hAJJ, spokesperson for the organizers, Benia Pius, noted that the program will take place at the Islamic Training School at Kanda.
Explaining the need for the exercise, Benia noted ?in spite of the problems accounting for the blood deficit in the country; fear of donation, apathy, and low level of corporate sponsorship, zongo youths across the Ayawaso district are converging on November 29 at the Islamic Training Institute premise to support a noble project dubbed ?Blood for Yaro? through voluntary donation of blood to save a life and alleviate the blood deficit in the country which in most cases goes against children and women in labour.?
He added that the project was inspired by the death of a child in one of the nation?s leading health centre as a result of unavailable specific blood type for transfusion.
?The youths are in full support of the project. We are more concern about the impact the units of blood would make in the lives of others, especially children and pregnant women irrespective of their community. We are not medical health professionals but we believe we can also save lives through our voluntary donation of blood.?
Mr. Benia appealed to individuals, corporate organizations, businesses and philanthropists to come to their aid to make the exercise a success ?there is a surge of rage to save lives and delaying the project means more deaths and this can be prevented, lets come together to save a life. Support ?Blood for Yaro? Project. Support us provide the teeming youths with an appreciable refreshment package.?
