Burkina Faso sees 12 percent increase of cereals output

Burkina Faso Prime Minister Paul Kaba Thieba on Friday said that the country forecasts 4.7 million tons of cereals at the end of the 2016-2017 agricultural season, an increase of 12 percent compared to the previous season.

The prime minister said this before the Parliament, explaining that the planned output will include 1.5 million tons of maize and 317,360 tons of rice.

The performance will equate, according to the official, to an increase of 6.2 percent compared to the average production over the last five years.

The country will achieve, he said, 1,542,053 tons of potentially marketable cereals, against a total potential demand of 1,529,021 tons, while an output of 1,580,000 tons of cash crops will be reached.

With this in view, the prime minister promised to producers a series of supports that include 20,000 ha hydro-agricultural development to be realized in 2016 and 2017. Enditem
