The National Union of Students in Chad (UNET) called students of all public higher education institutions of the country, to peacefully protest in various cities to express their disapproval of the abolition of scholarships decided by the government.
To tackle the financial and economic crisis in his country, Chadian Prime Minister Albert Pahimi Padacke on August 16 announced 16 emergency measures, including the elimination of scholarships to students.
According to Chadian Minister of Higher Education Hassan Mackaye Taisso, the budget of the scholarship amounting to 6.4 billion CFA francs per year (about 11 million U.S. dollars) will gradually be assigned to National Academic Working Centre.
Tension mounts in universities, institutes and training colleges in the country. Last Tuesday, the UNET urged the government within 72 hours to remove the controversial measure immediately. They also asked the higher education minister to resign. Enditem
