Yahaya Mohammed battles Ali Salama
Faisel Ali?s second half penalty helped Libya secure a 1-1 draw in an African Nations Championship encounter against Ghana at Free State Stadium yesterday.
The Black Stars took the lead as early as the sixth minute through Yahaya Mohammed.
The sturdy forward shook-off his static marker before directing a powerful header past Mohamed Abdaula in post for Libya.
Ghana continued to dominate proceedings, with Yahaya Mohammed the prime mover.
The striker sent a powerful effort just over from long range in the 23rd minute before being presented with a clear-cut opportunity to double his tally on the stroke of half time.
After completely outwitting two Libyan defenders he was handed the simple task of placing the ball into the back of the net, but he could only manage to direct his attempt straight at the grateful Mohamed Abduala.
The Knights of Libya looked a different outfit after the break and Elmutasem Abushnaf should have levelled matters in the 51st minute, but he could only manage to direct his header straight at Stephen Adams from close range.
The Libyan forward thought he doubled his tally in the tournament two minutes later but the goal was chalked off after the linesman adjudged that he had fouled a Ghanaian defender before finding the back of the net.
The Knights had an opportunity to pull level after Nuru Sulley brought down Mohamed Ghanudi inside the area in the 72nd minute. Faisal Ali stepped up and coolly placed the ball into the corner of the net.
Adams made a superb stop to keep out Ali?s curling free-kick and subsequently deny the Knights all three points in stoppage time.
The tie leaves the two sides deadlocked at the top of the table with one fixture remaining in the group stages.
Congo took on Ethiopia in the other Group C encounter.
