
Madam Sun Baohong, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People?s Republic of China to Ghana, on Thursday paid a courtesy call on Management of the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra.
Mr Bernard Otabil, General Manager of GNA expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the visit by the Ambassador.
He said, GNA, the first News Agency in Sub-saharan Africa, was established in 1957 by Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana:s first president, to help provide accurate information about the African continent, and had since its establishment, held on to its key philosophy of providing accurate, objective and credible information to the public.
He said the News Agency would continue to do so without taken into consideration one’s race, colour, ethnic or religion.
The General Manager commended the Chinese government for its numerous support to Ghana and the African continent, especially in the area of economic development, and called for more collaboration between GNA and the Chinese government, including the provision of technical support.
Mr Otabil said the GNA would be ready to establish a Chinese desk to be able to provide information to the 200,000 media outlets in China.
Madam Baohong commended Management of GNA for the warm reception, as well as the policy of the Agency to provide credible and accurate information to the public.
She said even though there was the existence of a cordial relationship between Ghana and China, there was the need to move to a new height, adding that this could be achieved through the Media.
She said there were many Ghanaians who were currently doing business with China, as well many others attending schools in that country.
The Ambassador said Ghana currently rated first in Africa in terms of the number of foreign students in China, an indication of a good relationship between the two countries, and called for more collaboration between the Media and China, to learn more from each other.
Madam Baohong said Ghana and China shared similar values, principles and development task, and it was imperative that the public was made to know of such commonalities through the Media.
She said China had adopted a policy of opening up with reforms, and was always ready to borrow good policies from other countries for its progress.
She said the Chinese government would, therefore, welcome constructive criticisms from the Media, saying that, the Media should always strive to paint an objective and accurate picture about China.
