The Most Reverend Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, Catholic Bishop of Sunyani, has reminded Christians that Christmas is not about “light streaming on the street, but light shinning over darkness”.

He said it was regrettable that its significance appeared to have been lost on many.

The real celebration of Christmas, he added, was to mark the birth of Jesus Christ – to signify victory over darkness in the life of humankind.

He therefore urged everybody observing the occasion to exhibit the spiritual significance of it through Christ-like character and virtues of love, humility and sacrifice for the well-being of their neighbours and community

Bishop Gyamfi said this in his homily at a Christmas service held at the Christ the King Cathedral in Sunyani.

He admonished the faithful to use the celebration to overcome darkness – wars, killings, disunity, disputes and conflicts within families and communities.

They should stay focused and persevere in prayers in the face life challenges.

“The essential requirement is to firmly believe in Jesus Christ, the light of the world who would surely shine in your lives.”

At the Bethany Methodist Church, Kotokrom in the Sunyani Municipality, the Very Rev Samuel Oppong, the Superintendent Minister of the Nkwabeng Methodist Church, said “Jesus Christ is the reason for the occasion of Christmas hence life without Christ is full of crises”.

His birth symbolised peace and therefore the need for Christians, and Ghanaians, in general, to accept to peacefully co-exist, irrespective of political, ethnic, and religious differences.

Delivering his Christmas goodwill message, the Rev Kwabena Asamoah Antwi, Head Pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church, Sunyani Newtown-Extension, asked everybody to have better understanding of the real meaning of Christmas to get the most out of its spiritual benefits.

“The festive occasion is about the entrance of God into human history and so an opportunity for us to reflect and amend for the better our relationship with Jesus Christ.”
