The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) commenced its 2022 Citizenship Week Celebrations at the Ashaiman Cluster of Schools to educate pupils on their role in sustaining Ghana’s democracy.

The Citizenship Week, which is an annual event, was introduced in 2012 as one of the flagship programmes of the NCCE to reach out to basic school pupils across the country to inculcate in them the responsibilities of active citizens and their role to build a strong, vibrant, and democratic Ghana.

It is also to create the platform for eminent personalities considered as role models in society to interact and impart virtues of good citizenship to the pupils.

Civic educators from the Ashaiman Municipal Office of the NCCE, as part for the celebration, sensitised 574 pupils, comprising 288 girls and 286 boys of the Ashaiman No. 5&6 Junior High Schools (JHS).

Ms Gifty Agyeiwaa Badu, the Ashaiman Municipal Director, NCCE, told the Ghana News Agency that 30 schools were to be engaged in every district, made up of public and private basic schools, but her outfit had targeted to reach 50 schools.

Speaking on this year’s theme: “Sustaining Ghana’s Democracy, Ghanaian Value in Practice: The Role of a Child,” she emphasised the need for children to be disciplined to uphold the Ghanaian values and contribute to nation building.

Under the Fourth Republic, the Ghanaian child and youth have been recognised as major sources of human capital and key agents for socio-cultural, economic and political development, as well as technological innovation.

She said it was imperative, therefore, to harness those great resources for the sustenance of the country’s democracy.

She called on children and the youth to show interest in the study of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana as they have a duty to understand the provisions and apply it to their lives.

The celebration ends on June 1, 2022.
