The Federal Capital Territory Administration said it shut 82 sub-standard medical outfits in the FCT in 2012. This is contained in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Minister of the FCT, Mohammad Sule, on Thursday in Abuja.
The statement revealed that 12 quacks were also apprehended and handed over to the police at various police stations, including Bwari, Jikwoyi, Garki, Federal Secretariat and the FCT Police Command.
According to him, three of such cases have already been charged to the Karu Magistrates’ Court for prosecution to serve as deterrent.
However, the Minister, Sen. Bala Mohammed, disclosed that some of the outfits had been re-opened after meeting conditions for their re-opening and paying stipulated penalties for the offences.
Lamenting that the activities of quacks had been on the increase, due to ever-increasing influx of people into the city, he assured that his administration would tackle the situation.
The statement said that the Private Health Establishments Registration and Monitoring Committee (PHERMC) had been empowered to deal with the situation. It further stated that FCTA would not relent in fighting quackery in the FCT as the activities of the quacks had impinged on the lives of residents of the city.
