Desire Mirembe was a first year at Makerere University pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Therapy. She was the daughter of the Kalungu district chairperson, Emmanuel Musoke.

Ms Mirembe?s life was cut short by yet unknown assailants who dumped her body in a sugar plantation in Lugazi.

?We picked her body on Saturday at around 10am from a sugarcane plantation where she was killed,? Karen Namara the Acting DPC Kawolo Police station told New Vision on Tuesday in a phone interview.

He said possibly Ms Mirembe was killed at about 3am.

According to the Police, Mirembe who was dressed in a blue skirt, a yellow jumper and legging pants, was found lying in a pool of blood with her head chopped off.

The body was found in the sugarcane plantation belonging to the Sugar Corporation of Uganda, part of the Mehta Group, in Kibubbu Village, Kawolo Sub County.

?There was a lot of blood where her body was found, but there was no sign of having been any struggle,? one of the residents said.

Ismael Mulai, the chairperson of Kibubbu Village said Mirembe?s body was discovered by children.

?They first saw the shoes she was wearing. They then saw a trail of blood that was stretching from inside the sugarcane plantation. When they followed the blood trail they discovered her body lying in a pool of blood,? he added.

The murder found Mirembe?s father Musoke reportedly out of the country in Germany on official duties.

A close relative told New Vision that they last heard from Mirembe on Friday last week.

?She was with some friends in Jinja over the weekend. She called us saying she needed some money, but we never heard from her again,? the relative said.

A sister to the deceased Elizabeth Nannyunja said: ?We didn?t hear from her since Friday, but we got messages from her phone stating; ?Me I have problems I have to go to Jinja?.?

Nannyunju however suspected that the message might have been sent by her assailants as it was in poor English.

Makerere University Guild President David Bala told New Vision that when the students? leadership received the news of Mirembe?s disappearance, they decided to send out messages through the social media in search of the deceased.

Kalungu West MP, Joseph Ssewungu who is a friend to the deceased?s father expressed shock about Mirembe?s murder.

?It is a very terrible thing that has happened to us, I talked to her father and he told me that his daughter was an exceptional girl among all his children. She was very bright and much disciplined,? said Ssewungu.
