Five people died on the spot while two others were critically injured after a bus hit a car in the central district of Masaka, a city in Uganda, on Friday.

Anthony Nkesiga, the Greater Masaka Regional Traffic Officer, told Xinhua by telephone the accident occurred when the Toyota Noah was making a U-turn in the middle of the road and crushed into the bus.

“The driver of the smaller car underestimated the closeness of the bus. The bus was too close to brake, hence crashing into the small vehicle,” Nkesiga said.

Those injured have been admitted to a local hospital, he added.

“We are always telling the motorists to be conscious whenever they are using highways. The roads are busy and there is heavy traffic flow,” Nkesiga said.

Local police issued a statement earlier, urging motorists to abide by the traffic rules this festive season.

Uganda registers about 20,000 accidents each year, with some 2,000 deaths, making it one of the countries with the highest road traffic death rates, according to police statistics. Enditem
