Four Malian soldiers were killed in a mine explosion against their convoy in central Mali, the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) confirmed Monday on the official website.

According to the FAMa, the convoy’s ambulance ran on the artisanal mine.

“An improvised explosive device (IED/artisanal mine) exploded when the ambulance of the FAMa convoy was evacuating on the Bankass-Sevare road. It was this morning around 9:30 (GMT) between the Parou bridge and Songovia. The provisional death toll is 4 on the FAMa side,” the army said, adding that excavations were underway in the area.

Since 2012, Mali has been facing a profound multifaceted crisis at the security, political and economic levels. Separatist insurgencies, jihadist incursions and inter-communal violence left thousands of people dead and hundreds of thousands of others displaced despite the presence of the UN (MINUSMA), French (Barkhane) and European (Takuba) forces.
