A government statement said the fighting resulted in some deaths, but did not give the exact death toll.
The statement said the fighting was between members of the Coordination of Azawad Movements and those of a self-defense militia called Gatia, which belongs to a pro-government coalition dubbed “Platform.”
The government strongly condemned the resumption of hostilities and urged the warring parties to “demonstrate restraint and end fighting in the interest of the people.”
“The situation created by resumption of hostilities constitutes a serious threat to implementation of the peace agreement, particularly the setting up of interim authorities which are supposed to contribute to normalization and securing of the population in the concerned zones,” the government statement concluded.
After the fighting that was witnessed in July, the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali set up an “interposition force” to prevent further fighting between the two groups in Kidal. Enditem
