Ghana forward Mohammed Fuseini set up a goal as Royale Union Saint-Gilloise opened their Belgian Pro League defence with a 5-1 rout of Westerlo on Saturday, extending a strong start to the season that follows a violent robbery in Brussels last month.

Westerlo took an early lead through Norman Bassette, but Union SG responded quickly and pulled away for a comfortable win away from home. It was Fuseini’s second assist in three competitive appearances this season, after he scored four goals during pre-season. RTBF’s match report did not confirm whether the 24-year-old started or came on as a substitute.

The result gives the reigning Belgian champions, who have already won this season’s Belgian Super Cup, a strong opening to their title defence as they also continue in Champions League qualifying. Fuseini scored nine goals and provided one assist last season as Union SG won their first Belgian league title in 90 years.

His form comes weeks after he was violently robbed in Brussels. Belgian police say five hooded men surrounded his parked car on July 26, dragged him from the driver’s seat and held him in a chokehold before taking two iPhones, his wallet and a Rolex Datejust watch valued between €8,000 and €14,000. Prosecutors have charged a 23-year-old suspect with theft with violence committed by a gang, and investigators believe the same group may be linked to two other street robberies in Brussels that day. Fuseini was treated and discharged from hospital and returned to training within 48 hours of the attack.
