Gareth Southgate announced his resignation as manager of the England national football team just two days after their 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin.
The loss marked England’s second consecutive defeat in the European Championship final, following their penalty shootout loss to Italy three years ago at Wembley.
Southgate, who managed England for 102 games over eight years, expressed his deep attachment to the role: “As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. But it’s time for change and a new chapter.”
The Football Association (FA) has already begun the process to appoint Southgate’s successor. FA chief executive Mark Bullingham noted that they aim to confirm the new manager as soon as possible, with interim arrangements in place if needed.
Under Southgate’s leadership, England reached four major tournaments, including the World Cup semi-finals in 2018 and quarter-finals in 2022. His tenure saw England win nine knockout matches, a significant improvement compared to previous records.
Despite facing criticism earlier in Euro 2024, Southgate’s resilience shone through as he rallied support with England’s journey to the final, showcasing ‘exciting young talent’ capable of future success. He thanked the fans for their unwavering support and expressed confidence in the team’s ability to achieve greater heights, leaving the audience inspired by his determination.
Prince Charles, president of the FA, commended Southgate for his leadership under pressure and for fostering a team that competes among the world’s best.
Southgate, who took over as England manager in 2016, leaves a legacy of transformation within the England setup. He significantly contributed to player development and cultural change, a fact that the audience will appreciate and respect.
The FA acknowledged Southgate’s immense contribution, reflecting on his tenure with pride and gratitude for his lasting impact on English football.
