The Ghana Police has made an embarrassing U-turn over claims that Black Stars defender John Paintsil stabbed his wife following a recent altercation.

DSP Freeman Tetteh, spokesman for the police, has come underfire for claiming the defender stabbed his wife with many calling for the cop to be sacked.

Tetteh jumped to the media on Friday when the incident occurred claiming that the Israel-based footballer attacked his wife with a knife.

The Pubic Relations Officer of the Greater Accra Police Command also claimed on Joy FM that the player chased his wife claiming she jumped a wall and fell unconsious.

Mrs. Richlove Paintsil phoned the radio station moments after to deny the report insisting even though they had a domestic quarrel which resulted in her injury, she was not stabbed by her husband and was conscious.

Despite the protests from the wife of the player over the police spokesman?s version of the incident, DSP Freeman Tetteh continued his claims on the international media.

With doctors now confirming that Richlove was not stabbed, calls have been growing for DSP Freeman Tetteh to be sakced from his position over the way he reported the incident and even pronounced judgement on the matter.

Now Tetteh has made an embarrassing U-turn admitting that the defender did not stab his wife following the misunderstanding at home.

?The investigator confirmed that truly she [Mrs. Richlove Paintsil] came bleeding and she had a cut on her upper eye lid but it wasn?t a knife cut,? Tetteh told Citi FM.

?A check at the hospital indicated that she actually suffered a severe cut on the upper eye lid and there is a clear indication that she sustained some kind of injury.

?We?ve not received any formal information from the woman that she will not press charges.

?In the first place she is not the complainant, so it will not create any problem for us in our quest to get to the bottom of the case.

?All the parties in the matter are so far cooperating with the Police.?

Earlier this month, Paintsil was part of the Ghana team that finished fourth at the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Paintsil, who represented Ghana at both the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, last played his club football in Israel after leaving England?s Leicester City last year.
