The Ghanaian government is seeking to elicit private sector investment and support for the implementation of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a senior official said on Wednesday.
Speaking to Xinhua on the sidelines of the one-day SDGs Investment Fair, Eugene Owusu, special adviser to Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo on SDGs, said Ghana needs innovative financing to be able to implement the SDGs successfully.
Although the West African country is on track on a number of the goals, Owusu conceded that Ghana is off-track on a number of them as well. Clean water, sanitation, life on land, and also climate change are poorly performing areas.
“Within the next 12 years we are going to scale up investment financing in those areas,” the official pledged.
“At SDGs Investment Fair, we look at the kind of partnership that we need with the private sector, so that the private sector will be able to scale up investments in the SDGs domain,” Owusu added.
The fair brought together businesses, think tanks, and state institutions from various sectors to exhibit their potentials in helping to achieve the SDGs as well as dialogue to find the right method of private sector financing for the SDGs.
Ghana has sufficient resources to be able to achieve the goals, the official said.
Jekora Ventures Limited, an environmental service company, was one of the private sector players exhibiting at the fair. Martha Nartey, innovative manager of Jekora, said the company with 300 employees believed that waste is a resource so their work is far from just collecting and dumping.
The compost facility treats both liquid and solid waste and compost fertilizer. “We are improving food security, we are improving the soil condition,” she said. Enditem
