Honourable John Kwao Sackey, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Ga-East Municipal Assembly has said that as the country celebrates yet another independence day which marks the 56th year of liberation from the colonial masters, Ghana has come so far since gaining its independence.
?We have cause to be happy because for centuries we were subjected to colonial rule by the British,? Hon. Sackey added. He was delivering a speech at the celebration of the country?s 56th Independence Anniversary held at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission?s (GAEC) park in Accra under the theme ?Partnership and Innovation for Building a New Better Ghana?.
He noted that indeed, Ghana?s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah declared that the Independence of Ghana was meaningless unless it was linked up to the total liberation of Africa. In truth, he said that the Independence of Ghana has led to the liberation of Africa as a whole, adding that today?s celebration is ?not an event for only Ghana but for the whole of Africa and for countries, organizations and persons who consider themselves as friends of Africa?.
Hon. Sackey hinted that the struggle for independence did not come on silver platter but through the efforts of heroes who fought so hard to liberate the nation and all political leaders who worked so hard to sustain the freedom that we enjoy now.
He said that the political freedom we are enjoying cannot be completed unless it is linked to the economic freedom of the people, adding that we believe that the future of this nation rests with the economic development of the ordinary people. Hon. Sackey pointed out that the Ga-East Municipal Assembly has partnered a number of institutions, farmer groups, artisans, NGOs and several individuals to come up with a number of social interventions to build the capacities of the people in the Municipality to establish their own enterprises.
Prizes were presented to deserving schools who took part in the parade. Ms. Florence Esi Damali, Director of Education,Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo, Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya constituency and others were present at the ceremony.
