GNHR to enumerate approximately 495,000 households in Northern, Upper East in 2017

Approximately 495,000 households in the Northern and Upper East Regions are expected to be enumerated in 2017 under the phase two of the Ghana National Household Registry.

Mr Robert Austin, the National Coordinator, of the Ghana Social Opportunities Project ( GSOP), who disclosed this at separate Assembly meetings organised by the thirteen Municipal and District Assemblies in the Upper East Region , stated that the programmes which had already begun in the Upper West Region was thriving very well and was aimed at targeting the extreme poor to lift them out of poverty.

He stated that the exercise which had already begun in the Upper East Region with broader stakeholder consultation meetings with the Regional Coordinating Councils and the District Assemblies would kick start fully in 2017 in the Northern and Upper East Regions, targeting approximately 495,000 households to be enumerated.

He stated that phase three of the project which would comprise the coverage of remaining regions of the country also by 2017 is expected to target approximately 4,861,000 households to be enumerated.

He explained that among the objectives of the project is to eestablish a Single National Household Registry, facilitate the linkage of the Registration of all the Social Protection programmes and to also serve a resource for policy analysts and researchers.

Mr Austin who stressed that GNHR when completed would not also serve as an instrument for proper planning and programmes of the assemblies , but also for other development partners.

He, therefore, impressed upon the District Chiefs executives, the Assembly Members , traditional and religious leaders to support the implementation of the project.

He mentioned that the project which would capture the extreme poor, said among the areas stakeholders could support was through Community entering, provision of accommodation for registration officers from far distance communities as well as help in the recruitment of enumerators.

“ You could also show interest by keeping your eyes on the registration process in the district and electoral area and draw GNHR officials to any problem identified as well as help in confirming the identification of new communities during the registration process” , Mr Austin urged
