The Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Uwajumogu, has commended the Academic staff Union of Polytechnics, (ASUP) and the College of Education Staff Union, COESU, for recently calling off their earlier indefinite strike in the interest of education in the country.

In a chat with Journalists in Owerri, last week, the Speaker, expressed hope that the education sector will be revived, owing to the suspension of the strike which lasted between six to ten months respectively.

He thanked the leadership of the two unions for heeding to the calls from relevant stakeholders in the country, as well as their maturity in rescuing the sector from imminent collapse.

While describing the Polytechnics and the colleges of education in the country as critical components in the realization of the technological and human capital development of the citizenry, the Speaker also lamented the enormous damages the lingered strike had caused both the staff and students and urged those concerned to work out effective modalities to augment the lost periods.

Rt. Hon, Uwajumogu, who commended the students for their patience and perseverance during the long period of the strike, further advised labour Unions to always put the interest of the nation first above their personal gains, pointing out that dialogue remained a better option for addressing industrial disputes.

He also called on the federal government to always expedite action in the fulfillment of its bargain with workers, as industrial unrests had caused the country more woes than gains in the past.
