As of press time yesterday Today learnt that an appreciable number of residents in Weija, a suburb of Accra, were struggling with vultures on a refuse dump in the area over bags of expired rice.
The humans were making frantic efforts to drive away the carnivorous animals which served as stumbling blocks between them and their dream of making it big through the carting of the expired rice.
Today gathered that what necessitated residents to throng the refuse site were two articulated trucks that arrived at the site to dispose of the bags of the expired rice.
Bagged in 100 and 50 kilo sacks, the rice which was brought to the disposal site by a Chinese firm was believed to have arrived at the destination because the importers were trying to outwit the security agencies.
According to an eyewitness, the situation was an eye-sore and exposed the level of ignorance of the people.
“My brother, this is shameful. You can’t just believe it, that people are actually struggling over expired products which have been brought here for disposal…”
The worry of the eyewitness was that people could actually repackage the rice for sale in open markets.
Though he could not tell the origin of the product, it was believed to have come from Thailand.
He could however not tell whether the police was present to ensure sanity.
