International golf superstar, Tiger Woods, has responded to claims that he was drunk driving following his arrest on Monday morning for “driving under influence”.
Mr Woods was picked up by officers of Jupiter Police Department in Florida after he was found passed out behind the steering well. The mugshot of a dishevelled and tired-looking Woods published on Monday went viral on social media to deepen the dents of the golfer’s badly battered public image.
In a statement published on his official website, the golf icon stated that he has acknowledged the gravity of his actions and takes full responsibility for all the consequences.
He explained that his unconsciousness behind the wheel was not due to alcohol intake but the aftereffects of prescribed medication. He then apologised to the public and pledged that the incident would never happen again.
Initial reactions viewed Woods’ statement as a contradiction to the earlier reports by the police. However, it has since been clarified that the police did not state categorically “the influence” the golfer was driving under.
