The number of illegal immigrants arriving in Germany reached a record high of 57,000 in 2014, police confirmed on Wednesday – a 75-per-cent increase on the year before.

immigrantsOf these, 27,000 were detained in Germany and 30,000 were stopped before they reached German soil, Potsdam police chief Dieter Romann said.

“The number coming through the southern border has more than tripled, while the number coming through the western border has doubled,” said Romann, adding that most illegal immigrants enter Germany from Austria and France.

The police also arrested some 2,100 human traffickers in 2014, an increase from 1,535 during the previous year.

“Illegal immigration, alongside the threat of international Islamist terrorism, is the biggest challenge currently facing the [German] police,” Romann said.
