Chief Inspector Abednego Aborweh, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) Station Officer at Dormaa-Ahenkro has warned that indiscipline taxi drivers and tricycle riders in the town would be prosecuted when arrested.

He said that would reduce road traffic offences and bring sanity into the commercial transport industry operation for the safety of passengers and the public in not only the town but the entire municipality.

Chief Inspector Aborweh gave the warning against the background that some taxi drivers and tricycle (locally called ‘pragyia’) riders unfairly parked to load or picked passengers along roadside, “even when there was no parking or no stopping signs,” instead of loading and picking passengers from the main lorry terminal.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Dormaa-Ahenkro, Dormaa Central Municipality of the Region, he explained the establishment of the new lorry terminal was primarily to serve as the main point from where all commercial vehicles would operate.

But the ‘waawaa’ (non-station) drivers and riders preferred to load and unload passengers by roadside “which is unlawful,” he added.

Chief Inspector Aborweh admitted that there were misunderstandings and disagreements with the allocation of sheds and loading points when the new lorry terminal was inaugurated, “but that does not mean drivers should take advantage to disobey the driving rules and regulations and disregard industrial best practices.”

He observed those misunderstandings and disagreements might have resulted from lack of proper consultation between the Municipal Assembly and the leadership of the transport unions.

Chief Inspector Aborweh, however, expressed optimism that the management of the Assembly had the capacity and competency to find an amicable solution to the matter.
