Mass murders, systematic rape and enslavement have become the calling cards of the Sunni extremist group Islamic State in the parts of Iraq it now controls, said a UN official Monday.

Navi Pillay, the UN high commissioner for human rights, said Islamic State militants had executed 670 prisoners at Mosul’s prison June 10, as they took the city. They were killed because they were not Sunni, Pillay said.

“Such cold-blooded, systematic and intentional killings of civilians, after singling them out for their religious affiliation may amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity,” she said in a statement.
