Ivory Coast government to reinforce media freedom

Cote d'Ivoire government will soon submit to parliament a bill aimed at reinforcing media freedom and removing jail sentences for journalists who commit press offenses.

The information was revealed by government Spokesman Bruno Kone after a cabinet meeting held in Abidjan on Wednesday.

“The new law will ease conditions for creation of media enterprises and reinforce media freedom in our country,” Kone said.

“The bill also proposes removal of detention in case of any press offense,” he added.

The spokesman said the new bill, which will be discussed by parliament, aims at adapting the country’s media laws to the current environment that is characterized by “new media.”

The new law will repeal the 2004 media law that “provided for imprisonment in case of commission of media offenses in the country.” Enditem
