The residents of Kufuor camp, a farming community, near Atronie in the Sunyani Municipality defecate in bushes because of lack of a public toilet facility.

They have therefore appealed to Non-Governmental Organisations, philanthropists and corporate bodies to come to their aid, as the Municipal Assembly had not yet constructed such a facility for them.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Kufuor camp, Mr. Edward Sumaila, a farmer and opinion leader said women and adolescent girls in area could not cope with the situation.

He said the water situation in the area was also not the best as the only borehole could not cater for the people due to population growth.

Mr Sumaila said many of the people relied on a nearby stream in the area but expressed the fear that the stream could be polluted during the rainy season as human faecal matter could be washed into it.

He said considering the helpless situation of open defecation, the community urgently needed male and female toilets.

Mr. Benjamin Atsukye, the Municipal Budget Officer, however told the GNA that the Assembly had shifted attention from constructing public toilets to encouraging household ones.
