Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive Kojo Bonsu has threatened to take legal action against hotelier if?

The mayor of Kumasi, Kojo Bonsu, has locked up a hotel in the Ashanti regional capital of Kumasi following the refusal of the owner and workers of the hotel to participate in the National Sanitation Day exercise.

The first Saturday of every month had been set aside for the cleaning up of communities across the country by residents. It has been dubbed National Sanitation Day and some analysts are calling on government to make it compulsory by backing it up by law.

This month?s exercise is being hosted in Ho in the Volta Region which reports say attracted huge patronage.

But in an interesting twist to events in the Ashanti Region, the mayor ordered the closure of a hotel which had a huge pile of rubbish near it.

According to the mayor, what made it worse is that none of the hotel staff not even the owner was seen cleaning or clearing up the mountain of rubbish.

Kojo Bonsu said: ?The last time we came here, it was heavy of filth. Today too I come here and you realize that people are working and nothing is being done about it. So I called my health sanitation inspectors and I told them to close the place down.

?I told them that one we are taking them to court and two we are closing down the place to be cleaned up. If the place is cleaned up and I am satisfied then I?d open it up for them. They should clean it up themselves. I have given them notice and if it is not done in the next few days it would remained locked.?

Meanwhile, owner of the hotel, one Opoku Sika in an interview said Saturday?s sanitation exercise took him by surprise, thinking that it was supposed to be next week. He has, therefore, asked his workers to immediately clear up the filth and clean up the area.
