The sources said the operation took place in Tiebanda forest where the terrorists were trying to set up a camp to escape from the vast operation that the security forces launched against them after an attack on Sevare hotel in August this year.

SomaliaThe terrorists, the sources said, wanted to use Tiebanda forest as their base to prepare attacks against Mali and Burkina Faso.

Local elected leaders told Xinhua it was the population that raised the alarm of the terrorists’ presence in this forest because they wanted to recruit youths from neighbouring localities.

In the last few weeks, the Malian army launched an operation in Motpi region to track down terrorists and guarantee security for the people and their property.

The operation led to last week’s arrest of 12 suspected terrorists. After being questioned, some of the suspects who were young people, revealed that they belonged to Macina Liberation Forces of Amadou Koufa.

Koufa is a radical preacher who has been accused of orchestrating numerous acts of violence in Mopti region, with the latest being an attack on Sevare hotel which left 12 people dead, including five contractors of the UN Mission in Mali. Enditem
