The Mayor of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Dr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, who is also the President of World Mayors and Leaders of Africa and of African Descent, has held a ball and an awards night to honour illustrious men and women in Accra.

The event dubbed, ?Mayor?s Ball 2015,? was also to recognize and appreciate the selfless service and dedication of past Mayor?s of the Accra Metropolis as well as staff of the Assembly.

Among the many individuals awarded is, Hon. Enoch Teye Mensah, Nat Nuunu Amateifio, John Saaka Addo, Justice B C R C Crabbe, Oberempong Nii Kojo Ababio V, Chief Imam Sheik Osman Nuhu Shaributu and Azumah Nelson among others.
Also, a 112 year old woman, Nora Nortey Nartey who was among the first batch of matrons of the Achimota School, and the longest service Presiding member of the AMA have awarded. Other staff of the Assembly including, Chief Okine were awarded for dedication and long service.

Speaking at the event, the Mayor of Accra, Dr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije averred that as a nation there was the need for all to appreciate the roles individuals play in ensuring socio-economic development of the nation, hence the awards.
He mentioned that both past and present staff members of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly have held the fort through thick and thin, in ensuring that, there is massive infrastructure development making life comfortable for people in the metropolis.

Outlining some developmental achievements he and his team of Assembly members chalked after taking over from past Mayors, he stated that, there is the construction of 107 Millennium City Schools to ensure quality education, reconstruction of roads and drains, construction of waste plant, Reconstruction of 13 markets in the metropolis, the construction of the Millennium City Complex to house the AMA, the CONTI Project as some of the projects the AMA under his leadership is undertaking.

He paid glowing tribute to the staff of the Assembly for their dedicated services and commitment to duty.
His Lordship Justice John Ajet-Nasam, who represented the Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Woode as the Guest of Honour, averred that the ball and the awards come at an opportune time since a nation that fails to honour its heroes is not worth dying for.

According to him, the MMDAs have significant roles to play in addressing lack of amenities and infrastructure as there is growing population and demand for these things.
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Osa Mills assisted the Mayor as they give the awards to the deserving personalities.
