Simon Petrus, 20, is a Grade 12 pupil at Abraham Iyambo Secondary School at Ongwediva in the north of Namibia about 700 kilometers from Windhoek.

Petrus invented a cellphone that makes free calls using radio frequencies as well as stream one television channel.

The chargeable unit is a complete set for a room as it also has a light bulb, a fan for cooling the room and socket for charging cellphones and other gadgets. The utility unit works on a radiator.

According to him, the phone works on radio frequencies and an expired SIM card.

MTC chief human capital and corporate affairs officer Tim Ekandjo, who met Petrus during the ongoing science fair in Windhoek Thursday, said they will fund his university studies.

Ekandjo handed Petrus a letter of MTC commitment about the funding when he finishes Grade 12 and chooses a technology degree at any university in the region.

“The country needs more innovative people like Petrus to ascertain that the future of technology in the country is bright,” Ekandjo said during the meeting.

He also said MTC does not usually fund Grade 12 pupils but this case was an exception.

Last year, Petrus showcased his other invention – a two-in-one machine that works as a seeds drier and cooler. Enditem
