Mozambican govt vows to end attacks by opposition

Mozambican Deputy Defence Minister, Patricio Jose, said the government will do all it can to put an end to attacks in central Mozambique by the main opposition, the former rebel movement Renamo, local radio reported on Thursday.

The state-owned Radio Mozambique quoted Jose while on a working visit to the northern province of Nampula as saying that “we are doing our part in the FDS (Defence and Security Forces), the civil society its part and others theirs to end the attacks.”

Jose stressed dialogue as the best way to put an end to differences among the people.

Jose’s statement comes at a time when armed Renamo men step up attacks in the central region of the country in the past few days, resulting in injuries to civilians.

Renamo and the Frelimo-led government are at loggerheads since the first democratic elections held in 1992, under the peace agreement they signed in Italian capital Rome with the mediation of the Catholic Church. Enditem
