MP leads demo: Against awful stench at Achimota

Even before the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) halts the dumping of refuse at a landfill site near the Achimota New Bus Terminal in Accra, the MP for the area, Hon. Elizabeth Tawiah Sackey, has disclosed her intention to lead her constituents in a demonstration to press home their demand.

The decision, according to her, is as a result of the health problems being faced by her constituents who on a daily basis inhale the ?awful stench? emanating from a garbage dump in the vicinity.

Terrible stench has been emanating from an old quarry site behind the new Achimota Bus Terminal which has been used as a refuse dump for some months now.

The effect of this, commercial drivers stressed, is a ?drastic reduction? in the number of passengers who patronise the bus terminal to board buses to their destinations.

Todaygathered that several complaints being made to the authorities [AMA] has yielded no positive dividend.

When Today news team visited the dumping site, huge tons of stinking garbage was found.

It was further established that the dreadful stench extends to other neighbouring communities including Dome Pillar II, Abofu, Tesano, Christian Village, Kisseiman, Abelemkpe and Dzorwulu.

The paper also discovered that passengers and pedestrians, who use the Achimota Mile 7 through Tesano to Dzorwulu and other neighbouring suburbs of the capital, are, on a daily basis,  compelled to cover their nose anytime the use that section of the road.

??Schools have resumed and the lives of our children are in danger,?Araba Tina, a worried parent who is residents at Achimota lamented.

?We are very much disturbed about the situation. We cannot even breathe. The authorities must come to our aid as early as practicable,? Madam Tina appealed.

Todaynews team also found out that most of the liquid and solid wastes produced in Accra are dumped at the site.

Residents in the area have therefore assured the AMA that the massive demonstration is to register their disquiet about the unpleasant smell.

When Today contacted the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA,) it claimed knowledge of the situation and assured residents of their commitment to deal with the situation.

Meanwhile, the AMA will today close the dumping site.
