The Apps Challenge competition, which was first launched in 2013, seeks to harness local talent in developing software applications.
And also, to provide developers a unique platform to market their applications by exciting them with attractive prize packages, by helping them to produce relevant local content to mobile phone users.
However, the launching of Version 4.0 of the Apps Challenge comes with the introduction of 4G LTE Service, seeks to empower local developers to utilize their skills to help Ghanaians enjoy the 4G digital experience with effective, relevant apps.
Speaking at the launching ceremony in Accra, the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana , Mr . Ebenezer Twum Asante , noted that during the maiden edition, over 45 unique applications were received and 10 apps were selected for awards at the end of the challenge.
According to him, riding on the positive feedback received after version 1, they introduced categories and called for entries under under apps in Education, Games and Entertainment and Lifestyle in version 2.0 of the challenge in 2014.
A of total 100 entries were recorded that second year, out of which 15 prizes were awarded.
“Last year , in September 2015, the Apps Challenge Version 3.0 called for apps in the area of Business , Sports , Games and Entertainment , and Lifestyle. Ninety -eight (98) entries , were received and 48 apps were submitted for the competition out of which 11 apps were awarded with over GH₵250,000 cash prizes”, he noted.
This he said, the first three seasons saw very innovative and interesting Apps with BuzTrick , Oware and Wheelo receiving top honours in the respective years.
According to him, MTN Apps Challenge V4.0: will reward developers of best Internet of Things(loT) apps that address local problems. Additionally , innovative and locally relevant Mobile Apps and Animated Video will also be reward.
“Indeed , according to web-based research aggregator , Statistical by June 2016 , there were 2.2 million apps available on Google Play for Android users and 2 million available on the Apple Store for iOS users.
Millions of applications with the number growing rapidly , available for use on our smart phones , created by millions of gifted,creative , persistent developers ; 8.7 million mobile apps developers worldwide , according to VisionMobile”, he stated.
Mr. Asante , indicated that, MTN Ghana recognizes that Ghana as a country has some creative people who have both the enthusiasm and capacity to develop apps for the global market . He has therefore entreated Ghanaians to participate in this year’s Apps Challenge.
This year’s event will be held under the theme “Challenging and Empowering the Youth of Ghana” and is scheduled to launch on 6th September, 2016
The event has been categorized into three participating groups
1. Universities2. Freelance 3. Senior High Schools
Projects submitted should be in the following categories:
1. Internet of Things-IoT(M2M) 2. Mobile Apps 3. Animated Videos
Students are allowed to enter applications as Freelance which will not conflict at the university’s slot.
As part of the activities of this year’s Apps Challenge, MTN is organizing a Digital road show on campuses of a selected tertiary institutions with the following objectives:
Information institutions on how to participate in the event Provide hands on demo for winning apps and interaction with previous winners. Interaction with experts in the ICT industry on the topic: Technology and ICT opportunities.
