The MTN Ghana Foundation has awarded scholarships to 200 underprivileged students pursuing undergraduate degrees and vocational training at public tertiary institutions nationwide.
This initiative is part of the Foundation’s Bright Scholarship Scheme for the 2024/2025 academic year.
The MTN Bright Scholarship aims to alleviate the financial burdens faced by needy yet academically talented students by covering tuition and accommodation costs and providing stipends for books and laptops.
Robert Kuzoe, Senior Manager of the MTN Ghana Foundation, stated, “We aim to fund the tuition and accommodation fees of these students to give them peace of mind to study.”
This year’s program notably includes scholarships for 20 students with various disabilities, reflecting a commitment to equitable access to education.
The selection process involved independent panellists who were unaffiliated with MTN Ghana and carefully assessed over 2,000 applications to identify the 200 most qualified candidates.
Kuzoe noted, “The panellists narrowed it down to the 200 students who genuinely qualify and need the scholars Bright Scholarship.
CEO Stephen Blewett reiterated the company’s dedication to investing in education, stating, “We believe that the next great idea or technology can come from Ghana, and that’s why we continue to invest in the people of Ghana.”
While he declined to disclose the total investment for this scholarship program, he confirmed that each student will receive comprehensive support, including accommodation, a laptop, tuition fees, and stipends.
Launched in 2018 as a commitment made during MTN Ghana’s 20th anniversary in 2016, the Bright Scholarship initially aimed to award 300 scholarships over three years.
Due to the program’s success and its positive impact on beneficiaries, the Foundation renewed the initiative in 2021 as part of MTN’s 25th anniversary celebration.
Over the past 15 years, the MTN Ghana Foundation has provided more than 1,000 scholarships to primary and tertiary students.
In addition to the Bright Scholarship, the Foundation established the Teacher Improvement Award Program, which financially supports public school teachers pursuing graduate or postgraduate education.
