Nana Akufo-Addo
Just days after the Supreme Court dismissed the election petition case, it seems the New Patriotic Party is divided on who leads the party for the 2016 general elections.
The division that has hit the party started after some party executives declared their support for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to lead the party for the third time and wrestle power from the ruling NDC administration in 2016.
In the wake of the defeat, the twice defeated flagbearer of the NPP said, he was taking some time of politics and would define his political future soon.
But the General Secretary of the NPP, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie popularly known as Sir John in an exclusive interview with XYZ
News stated that he is certain that Nana Akufo Addo would return to lead the party for the 2016 presidential elections.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP in an interview with XYZ News also stated that the executives of the party have already declared support for Nana Akufo-Addo?s third bid at the presidency after losing out in 2008 and 2012.
Mr. F. F. Anto also suggested that all presidential hopefuls within his party shelve their ambitions and allow Nana Akufo-Addo toDi go for a third consecutive time.
Mr. Anto believes such a move will inure to the party?s fortunes in the 2016 general elections.
However, some executives of the party have kicked against such calls describing it as premature and inappropriate.
The Eastern Regional Chairman of the NPP, Dr. Samuel Annor speaking on the XYZ Strict Proof programme said the lobbying for Nana Addo to lead the party for the third time must cease immediately.
He said the executives must allow Nana Addo time to make up his mind and announce his decision on his political career at the appropriate time.
Volta regional Chairman for the NPP, Mr. Ken Nuworsu has also called on the leadership of the party to call executives who are lobbying for Nana Addo to order.
He said Nana Addo must be respected and allowed to rest. Mr. Noworsu also added that the timing for executives to debate who leads the party for the 2016 election is wrong.
Mr. Noworsu called on party executives to focus on relevant issues confronting the party and temporarily shelve the topic of who leads the party for the 2016 elections.
