NDC Chairman Yaw Obimpeh with a bottle of schnapps in hand, invoking the Antoa deity on NPP leaders at the press conference in Kumasi yesterday
THE ASHANTI Regional Chairman of the NDC, Yaw Obimpeh, yesterday caused a stir at a press conference in Kumasi when he invoked the spirit of Antoa Nyamaa, a popular Asante deity, and other river goddesses in the region, to kill Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the NPP flag-bearer and other party bigwigs.
Using a bottle of Schnapps, the NDC chairman also prayed that the river deities to kill Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Manhyia MP, Isaac Osei, Subin MP and Kennedy Agyapong.
Yaw Obimpeh claimed that the NPP had continually lied that the NDC was stock-piling weaponry in the Ashanti Region to cause chaos in the area during next week?s general elections.
The press conference was to address the recent shooting incident at KO in the Manhyia Constituency where one Maffius Jibril of the NDC and his accomplice clashed violently with NPP members, led by Dr Prempeh, who were undertaking a house-to-house campaign.
Mr. Obimpeh, after addressing the issue, shocked the journalists gathered and his own party members when he called for a bottle of Schnapps he had brought to the party office at Asafo, the venue of the press conference, to invoke the curses.
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has banned the practice of invoking the spirits of river deities to kill people in the region.
Mr. Obimpeh said it was not true that the NDC was stock-piling guns in the region for destruction during the coming polls, stressing that ?we should be struck dead by the river deities including ?Antoa? if we are piling ammunition to cause mayhem.?
He prayed that the deities deal ruthlessly with Nana Akufo-Addo and other NPP officials if they were also guilty of stock-piling weapons in the region to cause trouble during the elections.
Mr. Obimpeh, wearing a black shirt and speaking Twi, insisted that he had a firm belief in the river deities to answer his request by coming out with a verdict on the matter he had put before them.
He was apparently following in the footsteps of his predecessor, Daniel Ohene Agyekum, who also caused a similar stir in the run-up to the 2008 elections.
Touching on the clash at Manhyia which resulted in people getting injured, he said Napo and his fans were prevented by Maffius from entering their house to campaign, insisting that all the inhabitants of the house had decided to vote for the NDC.
That, he alleged, did not go down well with Napo who ordered his men to teach Maffius a bitter lesson.
He claimed that the NPP fans shot the NDC man.
Mr. Obimpeh recounted how the NPP fans in the area had visited mayhem on NDC supporters without justification, wondering why the religious leaders in the country had shut their mouths by not condemning the NPP?s illegal actions.
He tasked the police in the region to sit up and act professionally so as to ensure the protection and the safety of all the people in the Ashanti Region, stressing that the country?s peace should be protected.
