Barclays Premier League 2012/13 - Newcastle look to escape relegation battle

Newcastle United will be eager to boost their chances of escaping the relegation battle when they welcome Fulham to St. James?s Park.

The Magpies have struggled to regain the form and promise they showed last season and have subsequently lingered in the bottom half of the table for most of the season.

The Tyneside club finished in an impressive fifth position last season but never looked like the side that finished above Chelsea for any part of this campaign.

Newcastle looked to have moved out of relegation fear after beating Stoke City 2-1 but successive defeats at the hands off fellow strugglers Wigan Athletic and defending champions Manchester City have decreased the clubs chances of surviving the drop.

The Magpies currently occupy 15th place on the log, only three places and points above the relegation zone.

Fulham on the other hand have had another stellar season under the guidance of Dutchman Martin Jol.

The Cottagers have shown glimpses of brilliance but also flashes of mediocrity in the season so far but for a club with a tight budget the London men have sometimes punched above their weight.

The Londoners currently occupy 10th position on the log but a win on Sunday will move them into 9th, the spot they finished in last season.

Fulham survived a QPR fight back to win 3-2 in their last encounter and the men from London will head to Tyneside having already beaten Newcastle once this season.

The reverse fixture between the two sides ended in a 2-1 win for the Cottagers at Craven Cottage in December last year.

Steve Sidwell opened the scoring for the home side on the night before Hatem Ben Arfa equalised for the Magpies 10 minutes after the break. Hugo Rodallega though gave Fulham the lead once again eight minutes later and that was enough on the night.
