The new storage facility, being developed by the Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute, would save the West African nation at least 8 billion U.S. dollars when completed, Lokpobiri told reporters in Abuja.

He said apart from reducing storage problems of all food crops in the country, the facility will also ensure agricultural produce is kept within the food supply chain.

With this development, he assured that the Nigerian government would achieve increased food production and address post-harvest losses along all the value chains.

According to Food and Agriculture Organization statistics, Nigeria’s food losses have been valued at 8.9 billion US dollars and estimated to be 51.3 tons across all crops.

This new initiative will guarantee food security and enhance exportation of agricultural produce which will in turn boost foreign exchange reserve for the West African country, the official added. Enditem
