“It is we Africans that can help ourselves and we can only do this by uniting to preach peace, love and harmony among our people,” he said.
Oba Ojaja II made the call when he paid a courtesy call on President John Dramani Mahama at the Flagstaff House, Kanda.
The Nigerian King is in the country to hold meetings with some Ga chiefs in the Greater Accra Region and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
King Ojaja said before the partitioning of Africa, Africans considered themselves as one people and worked in peace and unity to achieve their goals adding that it was unfortunate such ideals had been thrown into the galleries of history.
“Before 1894, there were no boundaries in Africa, but after the Berlin Conference in 1894, the scramble for Africa by European countries broke down our moral and traditional values,” he said.
King Ojaja said there was the need to revive the sense of Africanism and challenged the traditional leaders, the custodians of African culture, to spearhead the search that would re-invent the wheel of Africanism and development.
King Ojaja said in bringing back the good values that bonded Africans together, there was the need to ensure perpetual peace and harmony which would be used as the foundation for the re-invention.
“We as traditional rulers need to demonstrate to our people that in unity lies strength on which we can build our continent,” he said.
President Mahama, in response, said the role of traditional rulers in Ghana was critical and that was why there were Houses of Chiefs in every region to play complementary roles to the political governance of the country.
He said Ghana would continue to step up the existing partnership between political leadership and traditional rulers as they could both help in raising the bar of discipline in all aspects of the economy and development.
President Mahama said although political boundaries were existent on the continent, relations between Ghana and Nigeria had not been affected as they had co-operated in all spheres of their development.
