Nigerian police have foiled an attempt by gunmen to abduct eight travelers along a road in the country’s northern state of Kaduna, a police spokesperson said Saturday.

Police operatives on a regular patrol had an encounter with a group of gunmen along a road in the Chikun area of the state Thursday afternoon, who intended to whisk away eight passengers from three vehicles, said Muhammad Jalige, a police spokesperson in Kaduna, in a statement Saturday.

After an exchange of fire with the gunmen, police operatives rescued the eight kidnapped victims, said Jalige, adding one of the rescued victims sustained an injury while some gunmen sustained varying degrees of bullet wounds and fled into the forest.

According to the police spokesperson, the rescued victims, whose identities were not disclosed, were moved to a nearby police station where they were profiled, documented and escorted to their destination. Enditem
