Nigerian police on Friday said they have shot dead seven armed robbers while thwarting an attack in the country’s central region.
The police and the armed men were engaged in a shoot-out at a security checkpoint along the Lafia-Makurdi road between the north-central states of Nasarawa and Benue on June 4, said Catherine Anene, a regional police spokeswoman.
Anene said the armed robbers had earlier killed a policeman at another checkpoint in the area on the same day, causing the police to pursue them and prevent a deadly attack.
The police had been on the trail of the armed robbers for allegedly attacking road users regularly along that route.
Security has now been beefed up in that part of the country, added the spokeswoman. Enditem
