Nigerian troops operating in the central state of Benue killed three members of an armed group while raiding their camp, a military spokesman said in a statement on Thursday.

The operation by the troops in Anku Mbagen, a town in Ukum local government area of the state took place on Wednesday, said John Enenche, Nigeria’s defense spokesman.

The troops recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition during the raid.

Enenche said the operation followed a piece of credible information received on the activities of the armed group operating around the border areas of Benue and the northeastern state of Taraba.

The armed group had opened a barrage of fire upon sighting the troops, he said. There was no casualty on the side of the troops.

The gunmen met the superior firepower of the troops, as many of them abandoned their position and weapons, fleeing into the bush with gunshot wounds, the defense spokesman added. Enditem
