TACOGA Secretary General, Mr George Mpanduji, supported the decision taken by Nyang’wale District Commissioner, Mr Abraham Marwa, to ban cotton buyers not engaged in contract farming.
Geita region cotton stakeholders have directed ginners who buy cotton to be in the forefront in encouraging contract farming in order to revive the ailing cotton industry. In 2013, companies opposed to contract were punished for contravening directives issued by Geita regional authorities. The only firm, which obeyed government directives, was ICK Cotton Company.
This company has today pulled out from the so-called alliance of ginners who buy cotton in Geita region.
In 2013/2014, the Alliance of Ginners buying cotton in Geita region and the districts of Kahama and Kwimba in Shinyanga and Mwanza regions respectively, initiated the Ginners Alliance which included ICK which finally pulled out from the grouping.
According to Mpanduji, ICK pulled out of the coalition due to bankruptcy as demanded its capital investment of 684m/- from the alliance. The money was paid as per the company’s request.
