NPP Women Walk For Change

Scores of women who support the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Thursday July 28, embarked on a peaceful march against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration for failing to institute policies geared towards women empowerment.

The women, who wore NPP branded t-shirts converged on the Obra Spot, Kwame Nkrumah Circle for the march.

According to the organiser of the walk, Joyce Konokie Dampare, who is the Greater Accra Regional Women’s Organiser of the NPP, the Mahama-led administration has done little to transform the lives of women in the country.

She told Class FM’s Paa Kwesi Parker-Wilson, who covered the march, in an interview that: “We are expecting thousands of them [women]. This is a walk in solidarity with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the flagbearer Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. We are telling Ghanaian women that this is the time for change. We are changing the government not just because we want to change, but for the benefit of women because everything that this government has done has worked against women”.

She added: “Women form the majority of the population, so every government that comes with promises and programmes that will not inure to the benefit of women has done a great disservice to women. For that matter, what we are saying is only to reach to them [Ghanaian women] that this government has not treated women fairly in terms of our children’s education, in terms of our children’s employment.

“…In every home [that] you educate a woman, you educate a nation, so that tells you that if a woman is well-resourced, if a woman has skills, the home, the family and the community and the nation will be blessed. So, if the policies and programme will go against women, then you are killing your country, you are killing your people, you are killing the development of your nation. Women have suffered too much, we do the minor jobs. when you talk about informal jobs, you will see that women form the majority of those in the informal jobs, trading, farming.” The march by the NPP women coincided with a march by supporters of the governing party in protest to the jailing for four months, of a Montie FM presenter and two others who threatened judges of the Supreme Court with death.
